HINODE

an experimental film in no language

This is a CG movie that depicts saltation and growth of life in the sea using jewelry as the motif for illustrating the theme "Jewels of Sea." It creates mystifying and attractive scenery by the ores resembling creatures of sea and its transforming refraction and reflection of light that are affected by the organic moves.

梦想 - The Dream

an experimental film in no language

I had a strange dream the other night...actually, when NYC was covered in snow I didn't just want to sit inside and watch movies all day, I wanted to make one, so I grabbed my 7D and just started shooting. My goal was to create a story out of random pieces of footage and this is what it turned into.

At the Quinte Hotel

an experimental film in English

A fluid, vibrant and kinetic riff on one of Al Purdy's best-known poems, recalling the experimental, interpretive work of Norman McLaren. It's not a literal adaptation, but something more free-associative that visually accompanies the text while staying true to the playful, erudite spirit of the poem and Al Purdy's imagination. We used oil paint, acrylics, graphite, charcoal, wire, cut paper, a beer mug, linoleum, bottlecaps... you name it, we art-worked and animated it. Almost all the animation was done in-camera, except for a bit of compositing after the fact. Directed by Bruce Alcock.

ARTERIAL

an experimental film in no language

An enigmatic adaptation of the Keats poem La Belle Dame Sans Merci, Arterial is a silent, experimental film set to a pulsing soundtrack by electronic music pioneers Isan. Set in the industrial hinterlands of England, Arterial is a poetic meditation on the influence of landscape and environment on our state of mind.

Arterial has screened at festivals including London Short Film Festival, Aesthetica Short Film Festival, East End Film Festival, Split Film Festival, and FICMA.

Arterial made it to the top three of Shooting People's Film Of The Month, judged by Rodrigo Pieto (Cinematographer of Wolf of Wall Street, Brokeback Mountain, and Amores Perros) who described Arterial as...

"Intriguing and captivating, 'Arterial' presents the infrastructures built by mankind as a parallel to living, breathing organisms. Driving on streets that pump cars instead of blood cells, we find loneliness and routine only broken by fantasy."

Starring Christian Kinde and Sheena May.

Written and Directed by Christopher Ian Smith (www.citizensmith.net).

Original soundtrack by Isan.

Sometimes We Talk [2014]

an experimental film in English

Our first experimental short film. A meditation on the subject of creativity and self-destruction.

SYNOPSIS: A recurring dream plagues a writer's disturbed mind as he spirals down into the impenetrable darkness of his own psyche. A place where light isn't even an option - just a bad joke that falls flat on deaf ears... A place where Shadows go to die.

Rythmetic

an experimental film in English

The film was made in 1956 by Norman McLaren and Evelyn Lambart for Canada's National Film Board. McLaren, a Scottish-born Canadian, pioneered the use of stop-motion animation of abstract shapes synchronised with sound, using the same technique adopted 25 years later by Rod Lord for his seminal work in producing the animated book sequences in The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy BBC Television series.
