"032" The Canadian Affair

an experimental film in no language

“032” is a dreamy atmospheric journey through a series of suspended events. Music
from, The Good The Bad was commissioned to enhance the erie poetic palette that pivots
around stillness, leaving us curious to past and future.

The short film, uses texture and mood to slip through a rich tapestry of sliced
moments. It portrays the inherent power that an action, slowed almost to stillness, has
to evoke the imagination. Instead of the subjects moving within the shot, the camera
floats through almost perfectly still universes creating a erie yet undisputedly beautiful
world that is caught between past and future. While the shots which vary in tone from
mundane to optimistic to tragic do not offer a distinct resolution, the film ends on hopeful
note.

100 Years - Armenian Genocide

an experimental film in English

In 2015, we created this cell animation short to commemorate the Armenian Genocide Centenary. To the date, the Turkish government still denies the genocide took place, dodging their responsibility. 100 years will have passed this April 24th, and Armenians will keep on fighting for justice. This is a small tribute to the 1.500.000 victims.

AANAATT (by Max Hattler)

an experimental film in English

Complete credits, awards and screening history: http://www.maxhattler.com/aanaatt
For updates join http://www.facebook.com/maxhattler
Onedotzero interview with Max Hattler: http://www.vimeo.com/13454564

"Hattler proposes an unusual stop-motion animation, where objects of abstract shape and unknown function move in a space that bears no relationship to any kind of real experience. The various elements move within this three dimensional space, like parts of a dynamic painting that condenses a whole series of references to contemporary art: from the constructivism of Moholy-Nagy, to the historic abstracts of Mondrian and Klee, and on to the more recent experience of conceptual and kinetic art. Changing shapes, plays of colour and transforming surfaces compose a dynamic universe that is both alienating and fascinating at the same time." Invideo 2010, Italy

"An exciting experiment in the tradition of Oskar Fischinger (Komposition in Blau, 1935), Dwinell Grant (Composition No. 1, 1940) and Slavko Vorkapich (Abstract Experiment in Kodachrome, 1950s). Max Hattler presents a well-done interaction between music and moving images. Space is turned upside down and the animated objects become faceless dancers in a constructivist ballet." Vienna Independent Shorts 2010, jury statement by Anton Fuxjäger

"Max, AANAATT is one of your most beautiful animations. I often show it as an outstanding example to my students. Above all, the work is NOT just another demonstration of technique or technology, but rather a classic in the field of Visual Music, and a unique example of creative ingenuity and elegant design." All Flowers in Time

an experimental film in French

Un signal néfaste apparaît sous la forme d’une émission de télévision néerlandaise qui ensorcelle garçons et filles, leur faisant croire qu’ils peuvent prendre la forme d’autres personnes, voire de monstres.

“I am not from this place” declares a French cowboy. An old toothless man asks, “Do you know why you’re here?”. These shape shifting personalities infect young children with an evil signal in the form of a Dutch TV show. The red eyed girls and boys believe they can now become other people and monsters much to their delight.

Almost Nothing - short edit

an experimental film in no language

‘Almost Nothing’ explores psychological states of the mind as it focuses on a man’s inner turmoil.

This was my first short film, made with the help of close friends and with no budget. It was made in memory of those who we have lost along the way, and will hopefully show anyone who suffers that they are not alone.

ARTERIAL

an experimental film in no language

An enigmatic adaptation of the Keats poem La Belle Dame Sans Merci, Arterial is a silent, experimental film set to a pulsing soundtrack by electronic music pioneers Isan. Set in the industrial hinterlands of England, Arterial is a poetic meditation on the influence of landscape and environment on our state of mind.

Arterial has screened at festivals including London Short Film Festival, Aesthetica Short Film Festival, East End Film Festival, Split Film Festival, and FICMA.

Arterial made it to the top three of Shooting People's Film Of The Month, judged by Rodrigo Pieto (Cinematographer of Wolf of Wall Street, Brokeback Mountain, and Amores Perros) who described Arterial as...

"Intriguing and captivating, 'Arterial' presents the infrastructures built by mankind as a parallel to living, breathing organisms. Driving on streets that pump cars instead of blood cells, we find loneliness and routine only broken by fantasy."

Starring Christian Kinde and Sheena May.

Written and Directed by Christopher Ian Smith (www.citizensmith.net).

Original soundtrack by Isan.
