Storming Spain's Razor-Wire Fence: Europe Or Die (Episode 1/4)

a report in English

Since 2000, more than 27,000 migrants and refugees have died attempting the perilous journey to Europe. With an unprecedented number of people breaking through its heavily barricaded borders in 2014, the EU continues to fortify its frontiers.

VICE News presents Europe or Die, a new four-part series that documents the efforts of those risking their lives to reach Europe, and the forces tasked to keep them out.

In episode one of our series, VICE News correspondent Milène Larsson travels to the border between Morocco and Spain, where West Africans in their thousands storm the razor-wire-clad fences. Many are beaten back by border police or illegally returned.

200 Years Fraunhofer lines

a lecture in English

Researcher Joseph von Fraunhofer, born in 1787, brought us closer to the stars. Counted as one of the founders of modern optics, he succeeded in manufacturing telescopes in a quality that had never been seen before. In 1814, he made his most significant discovery, which was then named after him – Fraunhofer lines. These make it possible for us to get a closer look at space and to understand how stars are born.

Rubber Johnny by Chris Cunningham & Aphex Twin (1080p HD)

an experimental film in English

Rubber Johnny by Chris Cunningham & Aphex Twin (1080p HD)
Info from Wikipedia:
The concept for Rubber Johnny came from Cunningham's imagining a raver morphing as he danced. The idea evolved to the present film, in which Johnny (played by Cunningham) is an isolated deformed (possibly hydrocephalic) teenager kept on a wheelchair and locked in a dark basement with his chihuahua. The film was originally intended to be a 30-second TV commercial for the Aphex Twin album drukqs, using the track "afx237 v7". However, Cunningham grew to like the concept more and more and decided to expand the concept into a greater length (the original commercial remains in the film in an altered form.) The film was shot partially in infrared night vision on digital video. The film's music is "afx237 v7 (w19rhbasement remix)", a remix made by Cunningham; the credits music is "gwarek2", also from drukqs.
