Forget climate Apocalypse. There's hope for our warming planet | Jelmer Mommers | TEDxMaastricht

a talk in English

In the media’s version of climate change, the end is always nigh. But equating global warming with the apocalypse is wrong. In his talk, journalist Jelmer Mommers brings you the real story. The truth is more human and hopeful than fiction, because millions of people are working to end the era of fossil fuels, along with the violence and inequality that have accompanied this era from the beginning.

Correction 7 november 2016: there's an error in the slide titled ‘The top 10% of consumers emit half of the worlds carbon’. It mistakenly divides consumers in eleven groups of ten percent. The bar on the left is redundant. Data credit: Chancel & Piketty, 2015.

Jelmer Mommers is an investigative journalist specialized in the field of climate change and energy for the Dutch journalism platform ‘The Correspondent’. He focuses on the intersection between sustainability, culture, politics and economics.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

The Ultimate Explorer Vehicle: Test Driving Bran Ferren's KiraVan

a report in English

The KiraVan is meant to be the ultimate exploration vehicle—a ’Swiss army knife on wheels.’ A pet project for designer Bran Ferren, who named the van after his daughter Kira, the KiraVan also acts as a test bed for travel tech and vehicle engineering.

In the latest episode of Voyager, made possible by KAYAK.co.uk, Motherboard visits Ferren in LA county to see his souped-up caravan, which comes complete with everything from cameras and thermal imagers to an accompanying motorbike hoisted on the back. Formerly president of R&D at Walt Disney Imagineering, Ferren’s certainly not short of ideas to add to his design.

After a tour, we take the KiraVan for a test drive.

Could this be our ride to far-flung destinations in the future?

THE DOOR - Miu Miu Women's Tales #5

a narrative film in no language

The Door, by Ava DuVernay, the fifth Miu Miu Women's Tale, is a celebration of the transformative power of feminine bonds, and a symbolic story of life change.

The symbolic centre of The Door is the front entrance of the protagonist's home. As she opens it to greet a friend in the powerfully framed opening scenes, she is shrouded in an oblique sadness. "In the film, characters arrive at the door of a friend in need, bringing something of themselves," explains director DuVernay. "Eventually, we witness our heroine ready to walk through the door on her own. The door in the film represents a pathway to who we are."

Clothing is also a symbol of renewal, each change of costume charting our heroine's emergence from a chrysalis of sadness. In the final scenes, she takes off her ring, pulls on long, black leather gloves, and walks, transformed by the emotive power of the clothing, through the door.

Ava DuVernay was the first African-American woman to win the Best Director Prize at Sundance Film Festival, for her second feature, Middle of Nowhere, in 2012. The Door stars Gabrielle Union, Alfre Woodard, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Adepero Oduye and singer-songwriter Goapele.
