America's 2nd Revolutionary War

a report in English

Traveling from tea parties in Texas to "Oath Keeper" rallies in Massachusetts, VICE investigates whether the country is actually on the verge of the 2nd Revolutionary War.

The Department of Homeland Security classifies them as potential "domestic terrorists"; they prefer to be called patriots. As the economic crisis deepens, a growing movement of Americans is rejecting the two-party system and the mainstream media. They believe a violent revolution is imminent, and they're getting ready for it now. VICE correspondent Ryan Duffy crosses the country to meet the people on the front lines of the struggle. They include Alex Jones, a radio talk show host in Austin, Texas who is waking people up to the dangers of the corporate globalists — and has seen traffic on his websites increase dramatically in recent months. We also meet Sgt. Charles Dyer, a U.S. Marine stationed at Camp Pendleton who has taken an oath to disobey unconstitutional orders and take up arms against the government if it becomes tyrannical — and is training a citizen militia to do the same.

Inventor Portrait: Ralph Baer

a documentary in English

This video is part of an ongoing series of photo and video portraits of contemporary inventors from all walks of life. More can be seen at dfpblog.com/inventors

Ralph Baer is often called the father of video games. His invention, the Magnavox Odyssey, was the first home console system. I photographed and interviewed him this summer as part of my ongoing series on inventors (the book and app for which will be out eventually I promise).

Since he turns 90 years old this week, and this year marks the 40th anniversary of the video game, I chose for this video some bits from our interview in which we talk about, among other things, why he's still inventing at 90 years old.

The Immune System Explained I – Bacteria Infection

a lecture in English

Every second of your life you are under attack. Bacteria, viruses, spores and more living stuff wants to enter your body and use its resources for itself. The immune system is a powerful army of cells that fights like a T-Rex on speed and sacrifices itself for your survival. Without it you would die in no time. This sounds simple but the reality is complex, beautiful and just awesome. An animation of the immune system.

We are thinking of making an App for tablets out of this video. Would you like that? Did you think the visual system we developed worked? Feedback is much appreciated!

You can get the MUSIC of the video here: http://thomasveith.bandcamp.com/track/the-immune-system

Birthday Boy

a narrative film in English

Birthday Boy is the story of an 8 year old Jeremy Finkle, who is having the worst birthday of his life, because he's killed all of his friends. Jeremy learns that hating everyone isn't all that it's cracked up to be, when he tries to make new friends out of cookies.

In this short I designed a film that was black and white, but shot in color. The art direction and animation, built from miniature models, were all monochrome creating an interesting aesthetic of new meets old.

On Defilement

a lecture in English

Human sexuality shows occasional very surprising inclinations towards "defilement", even within otherwise extremely respectful and kind people. We shouldn’t be too surprised, as ever, by the unusual pathways of our sexuality. We should learn to understand them.
