The great porn experiment | Gary Wilson | TEDxGlasgow

a talk in English

Never miss a talk! SUBSCRIBE to the TEDx channel: http://bit.ly/1FAg8hB

In response to Philip Zimbardo's "The Demise of Guys?" TED talk, Gary Wilson asks whether our brains evolved to handle the hyperstimulation of today's Internet enticements. He also discusses the disturbing symptoms showing up in some heavy Internet users, the surprising reversal of those symptoms, and the science behind these 21st century phenomena.

More About Gary Wilson

Gary is host of www.yourbrainonporn.com. The site arose in response to a growing demand for solid scientific information by heavy Internet erotica users experiencing perplexing, unexpected effects: escalation to more extreme material, concentration difficulties, sexual performance problems, radical changes in sexual tastes, social anxiety, irritability, inability to stop, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

As a physiology teacher with a particular interest in the latest neuroscience discoveries, Gary was aware that their symptoms might be the result of addiction-related brain changes. Applying the website's concepts of brain plasticity, many former users have braved withdrawal, reversed their symptoms and restored normal sexual responsiveness.

The site has been linked to from hundreds of threads in forums from over thirty countries, with posts numbering in the thousands. Gary blogs for "Psychology Today" and "The Good Men Project" on the extreme plasticity of adolescent brains, the evolutionary context for today's flood of novel cyber "mates," and the neurochemical reasons why superstimulating Internet delivery has unexpected effects on the brain.

Many thanks to Pat Somers of Slow Moving Pictures for the skillful editing of this video.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Telling Lies

a narrative film in English

Written and Directed by Simon Ellis (www.simonellisfilms.com)

The morning after the night before, a rapid spiral of disastrous telephone calls chart the certain ruin of young Phil's day as he attempts to fib his way out of one scrape after another. Told entirely in animated captions.

Audience Award (Hamburg International Short Film Festival 2001)
Audience Award (Bitfilm Festival, Hamburg 2001)

Featured on the DVD 'Cinema 16: British Short Films'

"Such a simple idea. Such a tremendous hoot, executed to perfection. Whether it's something as simple as changing a single word, or as involved as adding an unspoken thought, the dialogue and its accompanying text complement each other with hilarious effect. If this playful text-fest pops up at a film festival near you, I highly suggest checking it out"
(Film Threat)

"Nicely illustrated... a humorous and syntactically inventive animation"
(Resfest)

"The outstanding Telling Lies hits on the simple but blindingly effective idea of contrasting the words that people say with what they are actually thinking. Witty, insightful and very close to the bone. We never get to see the characters but after four minutes you know an awful lot about them. A short film that won't leave you feeling short changed"
(Bermuda International Film Festival)

Growth (2015)

a documentary in English

An exploration of the universality of growing up through the eyes of those who have experienced it first hand. Captured entirely from above and featuring over 75 unique individuals, this short meditative documentary explores the complexity, subtlety, and beauty of growing up.

Last summer, I was commissioned by television brand VIZIO to create a film that would showcase the visual possibilities of 4K storytelling. What started as a commercial opportunity for "branded content" quickly blossomed into one of the most artistically and personally fulfilling projects I've ever been a part of.

GROWTH will be available to stream in 4K HDR exclusively on VIZIO 4K Televisions later this year.

NEWMEDIA

an experimental film in English

As seen in many sci-fi films tapes, we've been invaded again, but this time is our own fault: We've created New Media.
They've dominated the human race, changing themselves into biomecanical appearance self-sufficient organisms.
Far from the action footage and the explosions which define this film genre, the world is now an unshakeable place; victim of the alienation caused by the sent signals.

This prequel is a research and editing work based on footages from more than fifty movies showing shadows. The story is narrated from the shadows point of view.

La musique regroupe des extraits composés par Roque Banos et Danny Elfman dans lesquels ils utilisent le Theremin. Cet instrument illustre l'aspect fantastique du récit et le déplacement des ombres.

The soundtrack includes sound extracts composed by Roque Banos and Danny Elfman where Theremin is used. This music instrument supports the fantastic aspect of the story and the moving of the shadows.
