The Now - Ray Collins

a documentary in English

The coal-miner turned photographer is bringing a new angle to oceanic imagery

The coal-mining town of Bulli, south of Sydney, is not regarded as a repository of high art, nor as a vibrant and pulsing beehive of life and color, and yet there was Ray Collins. Seven years ago the idea of his new photography book, Found at Sea, would have seemed ludicrous to him; he was still working a mile down in the mines and hadn’t shot a single frame. Collins crawled out of the mines after blowing out a knee—“No shock absorbers left,” he says—and bought a camera with the payout. In the short years since, Collins has transitioned from subterranean to submarine and become arguably the most inventive water photographer in Australia.

Among Giants

a documentary in English

Risking injury and incarceration, an environmental activist disrupts the clear-cutting of an ancient redwood grove by sitting on a tiny platform a hundred feet up in the tree canopy. Already three years into the tree-sit when filming begins, AMONG GIANTS blends vérité cinematography with intimate personal reflection to create a vivid picture of life in the trees and the unwavering dedication of the activists.

This film was shot and edited in 2011, and a year later, the tree-sit ended as a victory for the tree-sitters (http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2012/06/26/18716373.php) As of 2013, negotiations are still underway for the sale of the land, and the exact acreage is still being determined.

Huge thanks to "Farmer," "Bingmouse," "Amanita," and the rest of the tree-sitters for allowing us to live with them and film their story. Learn more about their work, donate, and see what they're up to now: http://efhumboldt.org

Winner of the Vimeo Audience Award at the 2013 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and Jury Prizes at the 2012 Palm Springs International ShortsFest, the 2013 New Orleans Film Festival, and the 2014 Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, The Record Breaker follows Furman as he trains to set a new record: climbing Machu Picchu on stilts.

'A swimmingly edited, life-affirming film. Genuinely touching.'
— Robert Silva, IndieWire

'Hands-down the funniest documentary of the year.'
— Marianna Torgovnick, TED

'An ode to human obsession, dedication and monumental silliness.'
— Lena Dystant, Selectism

'A complex appraisal of a fascinating individual...McGinn's film excels because it does more than just focus on Furman’s unconventional hobby. As emotionally complex as it is gloriously ludicrous.'

Xatar in Prison: VICE INTL (Germany)

a report in German

Giwar Hajabi, aka Xatar, is a German rapper of Iranian descent who was released from Prison in December, 2014. He was originally sentenced to eight years in jail after robbing a gold transporter in 2009, stealing gold worth $2.2 million (and it's still missing). Previous offenses included breaking a playboy bunny's nose in Hugh Hefner's mansion during a trip to the USA, and alleged drug dealing during a stay in London. After the gold robbery, he fled to Iraq via Moscow where he was jailed, tortured, and finally handed over to Germany.

VICE Germany was the only camera team admitted during his stay in prison. In Xatar in Prison, we discuss his newly-found religious beliefs, follow him around during a typical day in jail, and attend a group therapy session. While assuring everyone that he has changed, his and his labels' music continue to spread messages of crime and violence. One of his most notorious music videos showed the exact circumstances of the gold robbery months before he actually committed the crime.
